Christian Fight Club

I wrote this for a newsletter, so I thought I would paste it here too. If you want more information on the program click: here.

Two nine year olds face off in a now familiar stance. They hold their bodies in that paradoxical relaxed state of tension that indicates their readiness for quick action. One’s eyes search over the other, looking for a potential opening to use his soon to be clenched fists. The second fighter uses a steely gaze aimed straight at the neck of his opponent, trying to use his peripheral vision to watch all areas at once, while he prepares for a quick kick. As if on some silent command, both yell primal war cries that speak of the unique energies within them, step closer, and begin to strike one another.

What could be more Jesus loving than that?

The above scene is a regular part of Lynwood Friends Church in east Portland. We host a twice weekly free Tae Kwan Do program open to the community, with thirty kids a week participating. Tae Kwan Do literally means “The Way of Kicking and Punching,” hardly what one would associate with a church, much less a Friends meeting. However, we have realized some amazing connections with this martial art, our community, and Jesus.

One can quickly see the benefits to the kids of the community. A successful student learns what it means to be aggressive within limits. The sparring matches are tightly controlled and regulated, and as such the kids learn to be forceful in only the appropriate ways for the time. In a neighborhood where naked aggression and high crime are prevalent, this is a much needed counter lesson. Furthermore, the discipline required to practice, work, and train is also at odds with the couch culture entitlement ideas of so many that surround us.

What about the fact that we are actually practicing fighting? Well, it is certainly a concern that is met head on. Any improper use of the techniques is enough to get anyone booted from the program, a punishment that is highly feared. However, we find that when kids are more aware of themselves, what can happen, and how they can react, it actually allows them to relax in tense situations and provides them many more options of conflict resolution. It provides tools so they don’t go into immediate fight or flight mode. Certainly a worthy endeavor for us peace lovers.

We also have seen the hand of Jesus upon this program. This outreach has been based primarily on the faithful commitment of one Jesus follower: Master Ken. Ken has taught martial arts for decades, including as his own business. His love for physical activity in general and martial arts specifically were not matched by his desire to run a business. So when he thought about closing down his academy, he began to ask if he could use his skills for Christ and the Church. As a member of Lynwood for over a decade, he simply sought the input of his church family: “Could I use this to make a difference for Christ?”

Lynwood provides space, prayer, and safety equipment for these kids, Ken provides his gifts and abilities out of service and ministry. We have conversations and relationships with people in the community. All for the low price of submission to Christ. So who knew that Christ could use anything for his glory?
